Heroes Introduction
In Age of Empires Mobile, heroes are one of the main focal points of your in game progression. You'll need to level them up, equip gear, rings, add gems, build lineups consisting of up to 3 heroes, and you'll need to pair them with synergetic heroes to create powerful marches to defeat your enemies in real time pvp combat!
Hero Skills
Hero skills are the core of how your march fights. Every hero carries four skills: a commander skill you manually trigger when that hero leads, a unique signature skill, and two flexible/customizable slots you can tailor to your plan. The flexible slots unlock at hero Lv.25 and Lv.38 and are chosen from a pool of six; commander skills scale automatically with hero levels, while signature and flexible skills are upgraded with skill points (flexible skills can also consume skill scrolls)—so invest first in upgrades that amplify your troop type and role. For synergy, match your lineup’s damage style by pairing flexible skills that complement your heroes’ inherent kits (e.g., active, secondary-strike, or turn-based effects) to squeeze out the most burst, control, or sustain.

Hero Talents
Talents are your heroes’ passive build paths. They unlock at hero level 20, and you earn points as the hero levels to spend across a class-defined tree (e.g., offensive, defensive, or tactical branches) plus simple one-point branch talents. Focus on a primary path that reinforces your lineup’s job: damage branches for nukers, mitigation and sustain for front-liners, utility and amplification for supports. Grab efficient economy/field talents early when available (such as bonus field XP or march speed), then capstone into the keystones that power your chosen playstyle. If a build misses the mark, you can reset a hero’s talents for 100 Empire Coins and re-allocate.

Hero Specialties
Hero specialties (Warrior, Marshal, Tactician). Every hero has a Military Specialty. The specialty bonus is unlocked by taking the Strength in Numbers talent on the heroes in your march; once active, matching specialties inside the same troop grant flat boosts to hero basic stats only. If two heroes share the same specialty, each gets +20% to all attributes; if all three share it, the bonus rises to +30%. This stacks with the Unit Type lineup bonus, so a coordinated march (e.g., three Pikemen who are all Warriors) shows 30% Unit Type + 30% Specialty = 60% per hero.

Hero Ranks
Hero Ranks are advanced by spending Hero Medals.
Hero Ranks provide
-
Unique benefits at rank 1, 3, and 5.
-
Damage increase at Rank 2.
-
Reduced Damage taken at Rank 4.
Unlocking Rank 3 is relatively easy, while unlocking Rank 5 is vastly more challenging. Rank 3 is a good goal to have for all heroes in your main marches, at least until much later.

For a legendary hero in Age of Empires Mobile:
-
Rank 0 → Rank 3: 170 medals (breakdown: 20 + 50 + 100).
If you don’t own the hero yet, add 10 to unlock → 180 total. -
Rank 0 → Rank 5: 590 medals (20 + 50 + 100 + 150 + 270).
From scratch, including the 10 to unlock that’s 600.
